We’re celebrating the Week of the Young Child (WOYC) and today’s theme—Artsy
Thursday—is all about children getting creative.
The best kinds of arts projects for young children are open-ended ones, where there is no pre-determined final product. The joy of open-ended art is in
the process, not the product. Open-ended art allows children to make choices, use their imaginations, and create with their hands. Art also helps children
develop fine motor skills, critical thinking skills, social skills, and problem solving skills.
Try this.
Provide young children with a variety of art materials such as paper, clay, crayons, paint, glue, string, or dry pasta. Let them decide which materials
to work with and what they will create. Or try making a collage with items found outside, such as twigs, leaves, pinecones, or rocks. Displaying your
child’s artwork helps them feel valued and proud of their accomplishment.
