thread will hold its 10th annual Book Party in the Park on August 11th, where over 11,000 donated children’s books will be given to Anchorage families. This free family event will be held at the Garden Art Park in Mountain View from 4–7 p.m., and will feature story time in both English and Spanish from Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz, AK Senator Bill Wielechowski, and Governor Walker’s daughter, Lindsay Hobson.
For ten years, thread has hosted the Book Party in the Park event to promote family connections and healthy child development through early literacy experiences. Over time the event has grown exponentially. Last year, over 1,000 people attended this free community event, and over 6,000 books were given to local families. This year, the Anchorage community donated over 11,000 children’s books to be given away, which greatly surpassed thread’s goal of 10,000 books.
“Reading books and sharing stories is a great experience for families to have together,” said Stephanie Berglund, CEO of thread. “thread’s Book Party in the Park provides a great opportunity for families to connect and discover the joy of reading together.”
The Book Party in the Park includes free books for children of all ages, story time with special guests, games, crafts, live music, door prizes, temporary tattoos, snacks, and much more. The event is a fun way for children and families to get excited about books and reading as well as a great way to promote quality early care and learning.
“Reading to children is a critical component of healthy brain development, and it’s a great opportunity to connect with your children and have quality time,” said Senator Wielechowski (D-Anchorage), who has partnered with thread over the past several years on the event.
Event sponsors ConocoPhillips Alaska and First National Bank Alaska, as well as business partners Title Wave Books, BP, and Anchorage Fred Meyer Stores generously support the Book Party in the Park and make this free community event possible.
