October is Safe Sleep Month and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month, a time to promote healthy sleeping habits for newborns and raise awareness about sleep-related risks to infants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIDS, the unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby, usually during sleep, is one of the leading causes of death for infants less than a year old in Alaska. SIDS accounts for 11% of all infant deaths in the state (2016-2018 average<\/a>), and while that number is slowly decreasing each year, more work is needed to reduce the risks of SIDS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safe to Sleep\u00ae Resources<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) <\/a>recently created the Safe to Sleep\u00ae campaign to raise awareness of SIDS and safe sleep nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
