{"id":37530,"date":"2021-02-02T19:27:49","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T04:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging2.threadalaska.org\/thread-blog\/strategies-for-teaching-black-history-in-early-childhood-education-programs-3\/"},"modified":"2021-02-02T19:27:49","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T04:27:49","slug":"strategies-for-teaching-black-history-in-early-childhood-education-programs-3","status":"publish","type":"thread-blog","link":"https:\/\/www.threadalaska.org\/thread-blog\/strategies-for-teaching-black-history-in-early-childhood-education-programs-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Strategies for Teaching Black History in Early Childhood Education Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>February is a time we set aside each year to celebrate Black History Month (BHM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all the racial tensions and civil unrest over the past year, now is a good time to highlight and teach children about diversity in your early childhood education program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/info.childcareaware.org\/blog\/4-strategies-for-teaching-black-history-in-early-learning-programs\">Child Care Aware of America<\/a> recently published the below four strategies for incorporating diversity, equity and inclusion into your early childhood program on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lesson Planning<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Invite families to tell their own history.<\/li><li>Children and their families can share pictures, stories, etc. that showcase their culture and traditions.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environments<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ensure that your class is represented in your environment.<\/li><li>Children should be seeing pictures of themselves and of people in their culture that are currently making history.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conversations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Talk about the new Vice President and how she is the first female, first Black and first Asian-American Vice President of the United States.<\/li><li>Discuss someone with whom children can make a connection, but also be explicit in honoring that individual\u2019s culture and\/or ethnic group.<\/li><li>You can also start with conversations children bring up during large group and learning times and build upon them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make Connections\u2026Quickly<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Try not to spend too much time on a lot of overstimulating details when talking about a particular person or event.<\/li><li>Remember, short and sweet with young children. You can use the acronym K.I.S.S.
