Drowning is one of the leading causes of &#8220;injury death&#8221; in children ages 1 to 4.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTake a CPR class. The skills you learn might save a child&#8217;s life.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAlways wear a properly fitting life jacket while boating, and wait until baby is big enough to fit in a life jacket before taking her on her first boat ride. Check out Alaska&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.alaska.gov\/parks\/boating\/kdfhome.htm\">Kids Don&#8217;t Float<\/a> program to learn about life jacket loaner boards.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tTeach children not to swallow water while swimming in pools, rivers, lakes, or oceans to prevent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthywater\/swimming\/rwi\/\">water-borne illnesses<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n\tHeat and Sun safety<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tNever leave a child unattended in a car. The temperature in a car can raise to a life-threatening level in a matter of minutes.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tApply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to children 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours or when children get wet.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tAvoid scheduling outdoor activities when the sun is the strongest, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tEnsure children have access to plenty of drinking water and shade.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tSeek immediate medical attention if your child has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/extremeheat\/warning.html\">signs of heat-related illness<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>\n\tInjury prevention<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tAlways wear a helmet while biking, skating, etc. to prevent serious brain injury.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tLearn the <a href=\"http:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/concussions.html\">signs of a concussion<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/traumaticbraininjury\/response.html\">what to do<\/a> if a concussion occurs.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tNever allow anyone to attach a rope, jump rope, leash, or similar items to playground equipment. Children can strangle on these items, so remove anything you find tied to playground equipment.<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tNever allow children to handle fireworks.
