You can keep your family safe and healthy in the outdoors this summer with these tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Car Seat &amp; Bike Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Did you know you can schedule a free car seat installation appointment at <a href=\"http:\/\/safealaskans.org\/\">Safealaskans<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/safealaskans.org\/\">.org<\/a>?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get advice on how to bike and walk safely <a href=\"https:\/\/safealaskans.org\/our-work\/programs-initiatives\/transportation-safety\/bike-walk\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Injury Prevention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn the <a href=\"http:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/concussions.html\">signs of a concussion<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/traumaticbraininjury\/response.html\">what to do<\/a> if a concussion occurs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always check that the playground equipment is in good working order. Watch for jump rope, leash, or similar items that have been attached to playground equipment. These can cause strangulation accidents for children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Read playground signs and use playground equipment that is right for your child\u2019s age.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that playgrounds have soft material under them such as wood chips, sand, or mulch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never allow children to handle fireworks. Instead of buying your own fireworks, attend a community firework show run by professionals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>S<a href=\"https:\/\/threadquip.quip.com\/aclSAFjR8fEK\/Summer-Safety-Tips#temp:C:aCYdac98c622f96489984567cc77\">ign up to take a CPR Class<\/a> from the American Red Cross.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/types-of-emergencies\/water-safety\/water-safety-for-kids.html\">Longfellow, the Whale<\/a> has a wonderful video series to help children learn about water safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can take a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/take-a-class\/classes\/water-safety-for-parents-and-caregivers\/a6R3o0000012oT8.html\">free water safety class<\/a> from the American Red Cross.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children are encouraged to wear life jackets while boating, fishing, and participating in water activities. Check out Alaska\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.alaska.gov\/parks\/boating\/kdfhome.htm\">Kids Don\u2019t Float<\/a> program to learn about life jacket loaner boards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heat &amp; Sun Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Never leave a child unattended in a car. The temperature in a car can raise to a life-threatening level in a matter of minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply <a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/sunscreen.html\">sunscreen<\/a> with at least SPF 30 generously at least every two hours and reapply after emerging from the water. Dress children in clothing that breathes. Hats and sunglasses can help protect them against UV exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure children have access to plenty of drinking water and shade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek immediate medical attention if your child has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/extremeheat\/warning.html\">signs of heat-related illness<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For ideas on how to get out and play, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelalaska.com\/search?search=family\">Travel Alaska\u2019s<\/a> family-friendly adventure recommendations.
