Summer Safety Tips

September 8, 2023

It’s time for outdoor family fun, weekend road trips, wildlife viewing, and camping around our beautiful state. You can keep your family safe and healthy in the outdoors this summer with these tips:

Car Seat & Bike Safety

  • Did you know you can schedule a free car seat installation appointment at Safealaskans.org?
  • Get advice on how to bike and walk safely here.

Injury Prevention

  • Learn the signs of a concussion and what to do if a concussion occurs.
  • Always check that the playground equipment is in good working order. Watch for jump rope, leash, or similar items that have been attached to playground equipment. These can cause strangulation accidents for children.
  • Read playground signs and use playground equipment that is right for your child’s age.
  • Check that playgrounds have soft material under them such as wood chips, sand, or mulch.
  • Never allow children to handle fireworks. Instead of buying your own fireworks, attend a community firework show run by professionals.
  • Sign up to take a CPR Class from the American Red Cross.

Water Safety

  • Longfellow, the Whale has a wonderful video series to help children learn about water safety.
  • You can take a free water safety class from the American Red Cross.
  • Children are encouraged to wear life jackets while boating, fishing, and participating in water activities. Check out Alaska’s Kids Don’t Float program to learn about life jacket loaner boards.

Heat & Sun Safety

  • Never leave a child unattended in a car. The temperature in a car can raise to a life-threatening level in a matter of minutes.
  • Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 generously at least every two hours and reapply after emerging from the water. Dress children in clothing that breathes. Hats and sunglasses can help protect them against UV exposure.
  • Ensure children have access to plenty of drinking water and shade.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if your child has signs of heat-related illness.
