This historic achievement marks a monumental step forward for child care in our state and is a testament to the power of collective advocacy and perseverance.<br>\u00a0<br>The Child Care Bill represents one of the largest state investments in child care in Alaska&#8217;s history, with significant annual increases earmarked for expanding child care assistance and supporting business tax credits. Starting from FY26, these provisions will directly benefit thousands of Alaskan families by making child care more affordable and accessible.<br>\u00a0<br>This success would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of over 600 child care advocates, families, and workers who joined <strong>thread<\/strong> in writing letters, making calls, and participating in advocacy trips to Juneau. Your voices have been instrumental in shaping this legislation and ensuring that it addresses the real needs of our community.<br>\u00a0<br><strong>Key highlights of SB189 include:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased funding aimed at expanding child care assistance by $6.1M annually. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provision of $2\u20134M in business tax credits to incentivize investment in child care programs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognition of the true &#8220;Cost of Care&#8221; for delivering child care services, bridging the gap between costs and state reimbursements. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tying funding to quality initiatives to uphold and enhance child care standards. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the child care champions in the legislature and our community partners who played pivotal roles in this achievement. Special thanks to the Alaska Chamber of Commerce, Alaska Children&#8217;s Trust, and all member groups of the Alaska Early Childhood Advocacy Group (AECAG) for their invaluable support and collaboration. \u00a0 <br><br>This is a significant first step toward addressing the child care crisis in Alaska and aims to reverse the decline in capacity and program closures witnessed in recent years. Together, we are paving the way for a brighter future for Alaska&#8217;s children and families. \u00a0 <br><br><strong>Here are more recent legislative wins that we&#8217;re applauding:<\/strong> <br><br><strong>Head Start Funding:<\/strong> The Governor vetoed half of the $5.2M increase to Head Start passed by the legislature, allowing for a $2.6M increase to the base of the budget. This is the first increase to Head Start in 14 years and means $9.4M in annual funding now. <br><br><strong>$7.5M One-Time Child Care Grants:<\/strong> Passed the budget process without a veto! We desperately need these dollars to support the supply of child care in Alaska and assist programs teetering on the brink of closure.\u00a0 <br><br>Thank you once again for your unwavering support and commitment to improving child care in our state.
