thread, Alaska's Child Care Resource & Referral (CCR&R) Network is celebrating national Step Up For Kids Day, September 20, 2012 with the launch of a video highlighting why investment in children and families is important to every community in the state, especially during election season.

"Young children can't vote," said Stephanie Berglund, thread's CEO. "We encourage people, no matter what their political affiliation, to register and vote in our upcoming elections with children in mind."

In its fifth year, Step Up for Kids is coordinated by Every Child Matters in Washington D.C. Step Up for Kids’ events bring together thousands of people to raise awareness among voters and elected officials about the issues American children face, among them access to early care and learning, poverty, child abuse and neglect and health care.

Nationwide events, including in Alaska, have ranged from local rallies and family-friendly festivals to candidate forums and press conferences. This is the first year thread is launching a virtual Step Up for Kids event through the video.

The thread office in Anchorage is also hosting a live event and will have voter registration information on hand from 11:00am-2:00pm at the University Mall as part of the nationwide celebration around children's issues.

thread will also be giving away a limited number of “Baby and Me” (written by Debora D. Stewart) books as well as holding a drawing for a free stroller for people attending the event and showing their support for Alaska’s children.

“We want to encourage people to get out and vote this election,” says Stephanie Berlglund, thread’s CEO “Voting is just one way people can raise their voices and step up for children.”
